 Sight Distance Rule

To have better control of your vehicle, the driver needs to be able to see ahead of their vehicle. If you cannot see 10 to 15 seconds ahead, you must slow down so you have better control of your vehicle in the traffic environment.

Be aware of what is around you while you are driving. This will help you know what to look out for and see if any unexpected objects or hazards are up ahead.

Check all your mirrors while you are driving.

  • Look left and right, ahead and behind you by using your rearview mirror.

Watch for railroad crossings.

  • Do not assume a train is not coming down the tracks.

  • Stop before the crossing, look both ways and listen for the train.

  • Look ahead to see if there is room for your car on the opposite side of the crossing.

Do not look at drivers that have been pulled over or other roadside activity. This could cause a crash.
